We are in what many consider a change of era that has also accelerated a lot due to Covid-19. Digital transformation is a necessity in all sectors and technological advances in artificial intelligence, collaborative robotics, artificial vision, etc., a reality at all levels. All of this has a common denominator: data management.

2. What benefits will the deployment of 5G technology bring in this field?

5G is going to bring substantial changes when it comes to doing certain activities. It is undeniable that it represents a clear technological advance and will change the way we work. Mass data storage and connectivity is now a reality and the possibility of transmitting it in real time and without delays will create new possibilities. Remote equipment management and process monitoring are going to change radically and it is something that Innovalia Metrology engineers have been working on for a long time, with the aim of offering new levels of service and support to customers.

3. In the current context, are companies also going to have to innovate to obtain financial resources with which to pay for their R&D projects?

The companies that last are always innovating in multiple aspects and clearly, in access to financial resources with which to pay for R&D cannot be otherwise. Additionally, right now two relevant events are coming together: on the one hand, the launch of the new European research framework program Horizon Europe; and on the other, the European funds Next Generation EU. Managing a large amount of money in such a short time is a great challenge and support in the private sector will be key in speeding up the evaluation and award processes. DIH-World will empower Digital Innovation Hubs, one of the engines of the SMEs digital transformation, providing access to harmonized tools, proven technologies, effective methodologies, solid knowledge, smart investment sources, rich training assets and an environment of continuous innovation.

During these three years, the DIH-World project aims to accelerate the maturity of the Digital Innovation Hubs so as the development of their collaboration capabilities by capitalizing and taking advantage of the European networks in benefit of their local SMEs. DIH-World will support then the Digital Innovation Hubs by providing services to manufacturing ecosystems focusing on the most traditional and least digitized SMEs and Startups aiming to increase their competitiveness and sustainability through the use of digital technologies. The DIH-World Academy will provide the tools to train Digital Innovation Hubs so they can take SMEs to the next level through open calls for experiments, which will offer technological support to SMEs and medium-sized companies.

The DIH-World network includes 27 Digital Innovation Hubs and those will grow to a minimum of 72 with the launch of two open calls, one in 2021 and the other one in 2022. DIH-World will be especially focused on those countries and regions with a lower level of digitization to establish a strong support system for digital transformation across Europe, also ensuring that all regions can take advantage of the opportunities offered by digital technologies.

CARSA‘s role will be to support the development of the DIH-World network by defining, preparing and launching open calls for experiments. Two open calls will be launched during the lifetime of the project and after the closing of each one, the proposals will be evaluated and selected by the consortium internal experts. CARSA will also be responsible for the coordination and management of the project guaranteeing the achievement of its goals.

On the other hand, CBT will be the company in charge of developing a communication plan, the visual identity of the project and establishing the collaboration platform while disseminating about the project, which is key since the project aims to reach SMEs in all Europe.

Finally, the Innovalia Association has the mission of directing the pilot experiments by support the digital transformation of manufacturing SMEs in its area. The pilots will also serve to assess the added value of experimentation. As a result of the pilot experiments the best practices will be disseminated in order to help other Digital Innovation Hubs and SMEs to work with similar sectors or technologies.

The first intervention of the Convention was given by the president of the Innovalia Group, Jesús de la Maza, who talked about the global situation as a great opportunity for the Group. “The technology we generate is nourished by the collaboration between the group companies by sharing experiences, know-how and market knowledge.” Jesús de la Maza commented while sharing positive and motivating news for the Basque group. “Each of the Group companies has been affected by the pandemic in a different way, but I can announce that the group’s global turnover has only been affected by a 20%, that we have maintained all the jobs and hope to recover the numbers at the end of the year”. In this same way, Jesús de la Maza took the opportunity to ask for collaboration between organizations and companies, defending the Group’s motivation to continue being an example of technological commitment and innovative character.

Then Jesús de la Maza started a debate with the Minister of Economic Development and Infrastructure of the Basque Country, Arantxa Tapia, with an inspiring speech on the situation, the main keys to lead the future towards a successful Industry and the role of SMEs and innovation to achieve it. Both Jesús de la Maza and Arantxa Tapia agreed that we are living in a situation that demands a lot of attention, but the urgent should not make us forget how important it is to keep the acceleration of industrial digitization, so that digital becomes something characteristic on the Basque Country companies.
Both participants agreed that the work must be continued so that the demand for an industrial product serves as protection for the industrial product of high technological value that we develop in the Basque Country.

“The industrial fabric has to be competitive; it has to be digital and modern. That is why investment in R&D is key, as is collaboration between organizations or collaboration with other European regions” Arantxa Tapia commented while Jesús de la Maza agreed on that the effort must continue, working on the optimization of the Industry must not cease and the two participants agreed that the Basque Country has companies of high technological value that are competing with large multinational companies and that it is important to provide them with the necessary support so that they are present in other markets too.
“In the Basque Country we are capable of developing great initiatives and doing it with our own technology. Therein lies one of the most important keys to a promising future” concluded Arantxa Tapia.

During the rest of the day, the representatives from the Innovalia Group, CARSA, Innovalia Association, Redborder, SQS, CBT, Innovalia Metrology, 3D Kumo and Technarte, presented the successes of the last year and the new opportunities, always putting on the table and sharing with the rest of the Group how the activity is being redirected due to the Covid-19.

The day ended with the intervention of a guest of honor, Luis Ignacio Vicente, CIO of Asti Robotics, who shared an interesting presentation on Robotics and Artificial Intelligence in the post-Covid scenario. Luis Ignacio Vicente shared an overview of the panorama, pointing out that the future that he shares is not only in line with Jesús de la Maza, but also with many of the speakers from the Innovalia Group.

“Almost 8 years ago, when I worked in Telefónica we started talking about Industry 4.0. Telefónica was a leader in collaboration in European projects and after a conversation with the CDTI they told us that if we wanted to talk about Industry 4.0 and innovation projects, we had to talk to the Innovalia Group, because they are the benchmark in this field and that’s where my collaboration began ” Luis Ignacio Vicente commented while reviewing his professional career.

The day ended with interesting conclusions from Luis Ignacio Vicente, Silvia de la Maza and Jesús de la Maza. Conclusions that allow us to clear doubts about the commitment to innovation and digitization of SMEs and that undoubtedly lead us to think that this new paradigm is becoming an opportunity for improvement for many companies, the perfect opportunity to expand fields activity and to find more optimal ways to develop your business.

During the launch event of the IDSA Spanish Hub, the Group will announce the initiative to facilitate the opening and reliable exchange of data between the industry and its role in the European strategy for the development of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence, with representatives of the European Commission , the Bilbao City Council or the World Economic Forum, among others.
