LIFE-NITRAZENS

Supporting Nitrate Governance through Citizen-Engaging Tools

Mitigation of nitrate pollution in water systems, Citizen science applied to environmental monitoring, Data-driven environmental governance.

The LIFE-NITRAZENS Project is a pioneering initiative aimed at mitigating nitrate pollution in surface and groundwater. Through an integrated and sustainable model, it seeks to reduce nitrate levels in the Duero and Ebro river basins. Its approach combines citizen science and changes in agricultural practices to reduce pollution at its source, using data-driven governance. This sustainable approach is replicable in other EU regions, such as Portugal.

The expected results of the project are as follows:

  • Implement an integrated model: Design, demonstrate, and scale up a model that combines citizen science, public awareness, and changes in agricultural practices.
  • Promote citizen science: Directly involve citizens in monitoring nitrate levels in six pilot areas within the Duero and Ebro river basins.
  • Improve data governance: Develop and implement a Data Sharing Platform for Nitrate Governance.
  • Promote sustainable agricultural practices: Encourage the adoption of Best Management Practices (BMPs) for fertiliser use.
  • Ensure replicability and transferability.
  • Establish policy recommendations: Assess project results using clear and measurable Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
THE ROLE OF THE INNOVALIA ASSOCIATION

Innovalia contributes as a data specialist, responsible for the implementation of data sharing and platform development, which are key to managing and analysing the vast amounts of information collected during the project. Innovalia brings extensive experience in data management and ICT solutions, crucial for developing the project’s data-sharing platform. Our expertise ensures efficient handling, analysis, and dissemination of the large datasets collected during the project.

Innovalia co-leads the development of the Data Sharing and Access Platform in WP3, ensuring integration of citizen-collected data, enabling stakeholder collaboration, and enhancing nitrate governance mechanisms across regions.
